2011 NBA All-Star Notes

All Star Saturday Events

If you follow our my tweets (like my over 5000 followers do), you know I picked Stephen Curry to win the skills challenge, James Jones to win the 3-point shooting contest and DeMar DeRozan to win the slamdunk challenge. All my picks won. Ok not all. But there are whispers that go along this line of thought…

From ESPN writer… In truth, McGee should have been facing DeMar DeRozan in the final instead of Griffin, but the hometown Los Angeles crowd swayed the judges heavily in Griffin’s favor.

If you saw the Minority Report docs, it’s there. Precog Agatha saw this, she was shaking and finally gave… “Blake Griffin will win the 2011 slam dunk compete.” We were all programmed that Blake will win the Slam Dunk by virtue of his amazing in-season dunks. And of course, because of Agathas pick!

And I tweeted…

“kahit na aliens ang kalaban ni blake, blake wins. judges and fans were already programed ftw coz of blakes spectacular in-game reel.”

“remember the aliens in the space jam, versus blake griffin in this slam dunk, blake griffin still wins”

You saw the whole thing, Ibaka, DeMar and Javale McGee gave a good show. McGee did a difficult two balls, two rings dunk. If you think it’s easy, try circling your right index finger and make a triangle off your left index finger. That McGee dunk required hand muscle mind body coordination.

And, Ibaka made the boy happy by retrieving a teddy bear off the ring. Tweeted, “that kid with the teddybear, he’s hilarious and cute at the same time. Ibaka should get 50pts for the boy’s acting.”

Meanwhile, DeMar actually dunked from the free throw line, the LINE. He’s the only NBA player who jump off the free throw line, again the LINE. MJ did not. Dr. J did not. Barry did not.

Griffin’s dunk over the car is not even that, it’s a jump over the hood. Not the car. Check youtube, a Euro guy flew over the whole damn car. But still, have no problem win Blake winning, to me, he deserves the trophy coz of his regular season dunks and the presentation (choir and car) he pulled.

And a BIG by the way here, that 2 minute time allotted for a dunk is a stupid rule. I mean, after 8 tries, we’re no longer appreciating the awesome dunk, we’re almost feeling a sigh of relief. Look, do a 3 tries rule, if he efffin can not do it in 3 tries, he cant do it. Ok Stern? Let’s abolish that 2 minute NATE ROBINSON rule. Or else, we’ll protest. Protesting is “in” now.

On three.. I picked James Jones coz I know he’s more of a set shooter, not a jump shooter (a la Ray Allen). And this guy knows only one thing, shoot threes (He said it so, 95% of his shots are 3s). Again, if you’ll bet next year who wins, go for the set shooter (Kapono, Bird). Not jump shooters like Ray Allen or Steve Nash or Kevin Durant. On KD awful 6 point performance… I’m surprised he tired out and his stroke is diff, from his game shot to his contest shot. If there are in-game dunkers, I guess there are in-game three point shooters. KD is an in-game three point shooter.

My Wish Event

Though this years All Star happening is a hit TV ratings wise, buzz-wise, I say there’s still room for improvement, or there is still room for one event, I’d like to see one-on-one hoops. Kobe vs Lebron, LeBron vs Blake, Durant vs Melo, Durant vs LeBron, Shaq vs Howard, Amare vs Horford, Beyonce vs Rihanna booty-showdown @ halftime of every game… who says no??!!

Kobe Bryant MVP

What the heck do you want? The guy played hard end to end, he played defense. Ok, there are ballhogin moments but Amare is right, Kobe is Kobe.

He played the game so dutifully that if Kate Winslet was there, she’ll blurt, so serious!

Kobe scored 37 points on 14 of 26 FGs, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals in just 29 minutes. And his team won. How is he not the MVP? How the heck KD becomes the MVP, he shot just same FG%, and lower stat across the board. Haters, calm down.

If you’ll say LeBron (finishing with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists ) is the MVP though his team lost, that argument has a lot of air and is quite acceptable. BTW, LeBron made a mistake by passing up an open three, gave the ball to Bosh for a three. Bad “DECISION” again? The KD over Kobe argument is a fart. Pfffffffffffffft!

Nike Zoom Kobe VI, LEBRON 8 V/2 and the Nike Zoom KD III Debut in 2010 NBA All Star Game

Inspired by the visual effects of today’s Hollywood blockbuster, Nike Basketball designers took cues from the movie industry when creating special colorways for the 2011 All-Star Game.

When Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and LeBron James step on to the All-Star stage February 20th, the shoes they wear will be as bold and dynamic as the players that compete in them.

All three shoes – the Nike Zoom Kobe VI, LEBRON 8 V/2 and the Nike Zoom KD III – will feature lenticular material in key areas throughout the shoe to create the illusion of three-dimensional moving images.

The lenticular pattern is best seen on the tongue tops. On the Nike Zoom Kobe VI, Kobe’s logo morphs into the West graphic. On the LEBRON 8 V/2 the East graphic morphs into LeBron’s iconic lion symbol. And on the Nike Zoom KD III, Kevin Durant’s logo morphs into the West graphic.

Nike Kobe Zoom 6

I got 6 photo upload of the Nike Kobe Zoom 6 shoes I bought last night at Nike Store Mall of Asia. I got no story to share.

Ah I have.

Here...

My wife was to buy me Zara polo shirts again (what's with the polo shirt people in my life want me to wear polo shirts!) or perfume. I said wait up, wait up, wait up. Here's what we can do. Since my FILA shoes retired last week, I needed a replacement and so rubber shoes it was. We went there to buy a fairly good, fairly priced basketball shoes (maybe around 4000 pesos) but I can't find a comfy kickass shoes that is both good basketball and a walk-around "shorts" shoes.

And so, I knew I needed to up some bucks to take home a no-sisi shoes. And I did.

Otions were Kobe Zoom Shoes; non-player-endorsed Nike shoes worth P4000; beautiful Lebron shoes, gray/silver colorway (P7500) and another Lebron shoes priced P5500; LeBron shoes, sames as Bron, are a bit bulky and heavy looking. And so I ended up with this Nike Kobe Zoom VI. Price is P7000.

#Have not tried this on court, so for now, you can google the review of Kobe Zoom. The only thing I can say now is, this shoe MOLDS TO MY FOOT.

Kobe No MVP this 2011

Truehoop has an excellent article why LBJ won’t register a triple-double season. Made me do this post too. I have this in mind yesterday whilst watching Lakers cruised to a win over the Memphis yesterday… Kobe will retire with only one MVP trophy! One less than Nash’s.

Why Kobe Won’t Win the MVP This Year:

  • Reason 1 (20%): THE KNEE - He’s opening the season coming from a knee surgery. Though he says he’s 100%, I highly doubt that. Only sheer talent allows him to go over 20 points average on limited minutes this young season.
  • Reason 2 (20%): THE (mile)AGE - He is after all, 32 friggin years old with a ton of mileage.
  • Reason 3 (20%): THE BENCH - Phil Jackson, the master, is putting on building blocks for a successful playoff run. He is giving more time to the relievers (Brown, Barnes, Blake) and it eats up few Kobe minutes. Though not in his DNA, Kobe too, clearly is making effort to acclimatize new players and the bench. Passing up some shots along the way.
  • Reason 4 (20%): THE SPANIARD - The emergence of Pau Gasol as a prime player or focal point of the Lakers offense. Gasol is shooting 6 more shots from last year (19 FG attempts per game this year with an efficient rate of .533).
  • Reason 5 (20%): THE BLOW-OUTS - They are blowing out teams! Which sends the Lakers starters straight to the bench with full quarter (and sometimes, a quarter and half) to go. Thus, Kobe averages only 31 minutes per game down from 39 a game (same reason why LBJ’s minutes and numbers are down).

If anything, the record that Lakers can shoot for is the 72-10.

72-10 - difficult and a misguided target, but this is within reach. Contrary to Jeff Van Gundy’s claim that Miami Heat is capable team to get 72-10, I say the Lakers are more likely to get to 72 than the Heat. An off-night by Kobe and Gasol, they are still capable of beating teams. That can not be said about the Heat. If LBJ and Wade take a night off, Heat are doomed. The Lakers can still win against most NBA teams with a Laker injury here and there (recovery by Bryant and Bynum/Walton absence has no effect thus far).

Current Lakers is better team than the championship teams of 2009 and 2010. They got 3 seven footers who got game (Odom, Gasol, Bynum), the best closer (Kobe), solid bench (Brown, Blake), great defense (Barnes, Artest), etc.

The Lakers are currently 4-0.

68 wins to go!

Kobe Bryant, the quest for greatness

nba-best.jpg

My rankings in on the right side.

Sportnation votes on the left.

I’m pretty close to what the majority has in mind as to how the NBA’s greatest ranking should go.

It’s pretty obvious, the old-timers are getting the short end of the stick coz the voters remember the “new breed.”

Michael Jordan is pretty much untouchable atop the list.

Guess who’s the guy who can bring him down to two?

Lebron James!

Nooooooooooooooooooooppesss!

It the freshly minted 5-time champion Kobe Bryant! No other guy can fly alongside MJ but Kobe.

How can he? It’s a stretch but Kobe could do the impossible.

Say, he plays at this still good level for 3 to 4 years and hooks up 2 more rings. He’ll get to seven championships. One more than Jordan. And while doing so, he’ll get to bump his career numbers - pad up his stats and set few more records. Then years 35 to 38 yo, barring any injuries, for sure he can still play (like 20 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists guy) and goes for the “numbers kill”. Numbers Kill means making sure he’ll get to Kareem total points, most games played, most tantrums in a career, get all Los Angeles team records and the likes.

With Kobe being a master of the game, Kobe can switch to different positions depending on who’s facing them. He can be the future point guard of the Lakers for all we know. With his solid inside game, he can play the small forward position (his likely position at the tail end of his career - just like MJ with the Wizards). And, an “old” Kobe is still better than 90% of the shooting guards who play in the NBA.

Since Kobe does nothing but basketball (no rap recording deals, no movie outfit, no documentary films, no cameo roles), I don’t see him quitting hoops tomorrow.

Kobe Bryant could end up playing 20 quality seasons with 7 to 8 championships and owning significant number of NBA records. There are reasons why Kobe picked 24 as his 2nd career jersey number. 2 times 4 is 8, his old number. Or, 24 is one over 23. For now, everybody knows, Michael Jordan is still up in the NBA air. But who knows.

When MJ said come fly with me. Kobe listened.

Kobe’s MJ Moments Snatch Game 4

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT HOOPH.

The day Kobe first set foot on an NBA floor, it was obvious, his game is patterned after the great Michael Jordan. Nobody can deny this.

As hard as Kobe says otherwise, there’s no way his game is patterned after Bob Cousy.

Remove the fallaways, the highlight dunks, the mid game shots, the drives to the hoop, the low post moves, and still you’ll see MJ in Kobe.

The way he walks, speaks, competes, the will, etc.

And I am told, Kobe just playbacked his whole Michael Jordan DVD collection last night. Yes, all night.

Kobe’s sched last night:

6:00 pm - Watch Orlando - Lakers Game 3 scouting video clips
6:30 pm - Dinner Time
7:00 pm - DVD TIME…. “COME FLY WITH ME”
8:00 pm - “Michael Jordan’s Playground”
9:00 pm - “Air Time”
10:00 pm - “Above and Beyond”
11:00 pm - “His Airness”
12:00 MN - Watch interracial p*rn.
12:16 am - Bed time

And so he woke up with an, ahhmm, a breath of fresh air, Air Jordan that is.

Game 4, he came out of the dugout today, more than ever, MJ-ish.

People… Did you all see the way he chewed the gum? That’s MJ patented. Did you see his catch-the-ball-in-the-elbow-i-will-not-dribble-ill-take-this-shot-anyway-shot? That’s on page 68 of the Michael Jordan How To Score With Style Handbook.

Did you see how he carried the ball at the top of the key, on isos? The nonchalant dribble. Did you some bits of shrug every shot made? Did you the fist pumps? Did you the grit & sneer of Kobe?

Did you see how he rovered many times to cover Dwight Howard? Did you see how Kobe grabbed the ball from Howard’s grasp (a parallel to the crucial steal of MJ from Malone)?

But wait, there’s more.

The two three point shots of Fisher both came out because of Kobe’s willingness to pass the ball. Critics are all crying for this, when will he be able to trust his mates in the biggest stage of the game?

Guys, the answer is now.

First up, the 3-point tying shot of Derek Fisher that tied the game.

Lakers inbounded from the backcourt with 11 seconds then temporarily & successfully denied Bryant the ball for some seconds. Kobe freed up and got the ball, they crowded him. Kobe took the defense with him towards the endline & side of Lakers bench. Hedo & Pietrus doubled then Kobe, AKA, Mr. Willingly Yours passed the ball to Ariza. Ariza passed to Derek Fisher. Lakers playing 4 on 3, defense on the edge, Nelson backed-up a little (big time mistake btw) and swoosh, all tied.

Almost same play by MJ in the Paxon shot over Phoenix Suns in 93. Defense overreacting to MJ backcourt handle, he passed the ball to Pippen at the centercourt, Pip found Paxon wide open and there’s goes Barkley’s dream ring.

Second down, the back breaking, air zapping shot by Derek Fisher.

Kobe in the block, Jameer Nelson doubled off Derek Fisher and leaves The Fish wide open. Kobe, ahem, the willing passer, delivered the ball to the perfectly open Fisher. Swoosh. Lakers up by 3 with 30 secs left.

Oh, check out the Steve Kerr - Michael Jordan play, exactly same play. MJ defended by Bryon Russell and he passed. As a bonus replica, both doubling point guards, John Stockton & Jameer Nelson fell down leaving Kerr & Fisher with literally the shot of their lives. (Ah wait, Fisher’s 0.4 shot is his trademark)

Lakers lead 3 - 1.

Ladies & gentlemen, Kobe’s two MJ moments in one game.

Plus bonus MJ-chew-the-gum-alike by The Mamba. Awesome.

(For the Lakers win, special mention to Ariza’s play, Derek Fisher’s clutchness, Pau Gasol steadiness, Howard’s choking on the FT line and Adam Morrison gorgeous coat & tie.)

Guarding, err, Covering Kobe Bryant

I was tasked by Phil Jackson, err, Mark to cover Kobe's Supernatural Tour - Manila leg. Suffice to say, I am clueless as to how things would go during the day. But because the stuff was all for fun, meaning I get nothing but see Kobe in person, it’s all good. I posted my experience over at Hoops.Blink.Ph blog, the edited version.

Below, is the rakenrol version of the post covering the presscon and the Ultra event.

kobe-tj-presscon.jpg
Kobe and TJ jumpstarting the event.

Kobe Bryant in town. So am I. Here goes my first attempt of doing some "media" stuff . I say ditching work to do this presscon was worth it. This stuff happens only once or twice in a decade. Bar none, Kobe Bryant it NBA's biggest draw.

Call time is 11:00 am over at Quezon Hall Shangri La Makati. The none-Makatipboy in me, I parked at Park-Square 2 when there's parking lot near Landmark. So I went malling first. Thus, I got this new speed bag - punching bag.

Over hundred media and fotogs packed the pressroom doing their own version boxing out. Powerful camera and lenses they were carrying. My Canon Digital Camera wouldn’t go out of the case in utter insecurity. There were some registrations required and Media-ID distribution. Guess what, I am packed digitally but I got no effing pen. But the maniac in me, I stole hotel’s pen and notepad set over at the public phone booth. During the registration, they were like ROTC boys signing up for the attendance sheet. Mad scramble.

As usual, Filipino time, already 11.30, there's no Kobe Bean Bryant still. Quite understandable, Kobe is a big star, he has his own protocol and to add, the press wants to do things their way, ie, storm the stage and even delay. Barker says, for the TV Crews to stay out of the stage vicinity and go to the designated areas but the hell, they were deaf.

The press photographers-videographers and uzis (to where I am categorized) were doubling by the minute, dunno if I'll be able to squeeze in to get a clear shot of Kobe. (Looking at my captured pictures, I think, I captured few good pictures, the rest were fade-away shots, so to speak.)

In the house were Chino Trinidad (who was very accommodating when I asked for a shot), Noel Zarate who seemed to know everybody in the crowd, Anthony Suntay, Beth Celis and Dyan Castillejo. My man, the Dean - Quinito Henson was there. The Dean consented on my request for a shot. By this time, your “media” guy is turning out to be a “syano” guy, dragging every celebrity for a shot. BTW, Kume Chino Trinidad volunteered to shoot away while I was gleaming at the idea of me and Quinito together for a shot. They may have some articles that I don't agree with, but the two, Chino and Quinito were cool dudes.

kobe-chino-quinito-presscon.jpg
Check-out the two cool dudes (Chino and Qunito), men in the mirror, uh-hooo.

BTW, the girl who hosts GMA’s Sapulso was there. She’s the petite chinita chic. I wanted to take the photo op, I just dunno how to approach her without getting lower than the state I was in. Who knows, if Debraliz or Lou Beloso was there, I’ll ask for pics too.

Past 12 noon, press-con is now turning into a depress-con to me.

The first good news of the day, free lunch. Or, shall we say, SUPERB FREE LUNCH. Buffet lunch meal served outside the presscon room. The foodssssss were by Shangri La, and so, beleive me, food was delizioso. Oh BTW, to make my fellow Bloggers here at Hoops green, there were pretty girls in the event too.

I gobbled up (or down) caesars’ salad, potato salad, fish and beef meals and had blueberry cheese cake as my dessert. Bottomless drinks everywhere.

(BTW, there's this tabloid newspaper guy, he took a trayload of meal. I think he went on a full-time tasting spree. He took all that Shangri La could offer. After that, he had 5 to 7 cakes of different variety. Name it, choco-creme, choco-mocha, choco-puta, strawberry, blueberry, whiteberry, yeah all the berries you could think of. Amazingly, he consumed all without throwing up.)

I was sitted next a highscool kid who befriended me and I think we now have a friendship that could last a lifetime. He asked approximate 128 questions regarding Kobe and 221 questions asking, "nanjan na si Kobe?"

Around 1:00 pm, no Kobe still.

Then, minutes later, TJ Manotoc started it all. Nike Country Manager Melissa Crucillo gave a short message too. She’s cool (and cute), she knows, she cant drag her monologue. She mentioned Nike’s drive in developing local basketball and bringing Kobe in here to inspire young kids to play some hoops. Or in short, Kobe is out here because it's part of his contract to do so, to sell Nike Gears!

kobe-melissa-presscon.jpg
Quick memo from Nike Country Manager, Melissa Crucillo.

And finally, the Super Natural entered the scene. He came in wearing, ahhm, Nike Gears!

Kobe! Kobe! Kobe!

Prescon starts now.

Is it me, or Kobe really mimics Michael Jordan from ground up. That's not a knack on Kobe but really, the way he speaks and moves, it's soooooo MJ. Listen to some clips, he went like, "basically I am here to spread the game" in a tone and manner that he surely got from MJ.

kobe-presscon.jpg
Kobe getting it from the media.

Anyway, some of the details I got from Kobe's remarks and the Q n A.

KOBE MESSAGE

He's out for an Asian swing to spread the game. He's to encourage more kids to play the game of basketball. Also, to teach some select kids some Kobe drills. Drills that he calls "Black Out". Yeah, the "Black Out" drills from the Black Mamba. He also out to explore and develop his partnership with Nike. Simply put, he's also out to sway people to buy swooshed gears!)

FROM THE QnA SESSION

- He likes playing for both U.S.A. and the Lakers. Sched don’t conflict anyways, USA games happen during summer. He also noted that Greece and Spain as world basketball heavyweights.

- Gino Rufino of ANC Hard Ball (later, the co-hosts the ULTRA event) asked Kobe to choose between an NBA Ring or an Olympic Gold. Kobe, a thirsty sanamagan baller, he says he is out to get both.

- Comparing the original Dream Team and Team USA 2007, he says the challenge is now greater. The world basketball order is now different and many countries improved.

- Regarding Lakers, he answered blank, he will just play as hard as he can, whoever is in LA town (including Kobe himself if he's still in town come 2007-2008).

- The Role model stuff, Kobe went a little serious. He went like, nobody's perfect. And says, role model is a person that learns from mistake. Ahhhh I see, like Kobe eh?

- What makes him tick with young kids? he says, it’s his love of game, love of life and living it to the fullest.

- What motivates Kobe, critics or the praises? Kobe says, both. But more importantly, winning motivates him.

- One Dude greeted Kobe a belated happy birthday, ahhhhh, isn’t he nice (or gay)? Anyways, the question, if he has money, he’s the Laker owner and has salary cap flexibility, who'd he take? Kobe says, the 2007 USA team members. Borrriiiiing!

- Kobe's diet is mainly skipping the junks, the ice cream, apple pies, cheesecakes, you know, the stuff that Shangri La served us.

- On a related note, Kobe says he dropped 20 pounds primarily for defense. The plan is to have a stronger and faster Kobe come opening night.

- Regarding the future NBA bearers (Wade, Melo and Lebron), he says all are good and do things differently. Ah yeah, the Basketball Ambassador Kobe.

- With a tougher challenge in 2008 Beijing, they are out to improve the team and he says Colangelo and Coack K know what they are doing.

- Regarding any chance of him doing Hollywood, he says NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! Oh c’mon now Kobe, you are telling us you don't envy Shaq's epic films Kazaaam and Steel?

- What monicker Kobe wants? He says he's cool with Kobe. And but of course, the self-initiated monicker, Black Mamba, he mentioned it. So there, the Black Mamba doing nice little chit-chattin.

Part 2 tomorrow, I'll post the ULTRA Event. I skipped the Bonifacio Highstreet event coz I had another thing planned out way before the Kobe sched came out. Also, Nike handed me a Media Kit, I'll see what I can dig and post some stuff. BTW, thanks to Nike - Ogilvy for sending Hoops.Blink.Ph a media invite and Ultra tickets.

Back to work now...

Part 2: The ULTRA Blackout Drills

Part 1: The Presscon

Last time I'm inside the ULTRA was back in 1989, I think San Mig and Ginebra were in the Finals. I can't remember, I am getting old. I was a kid then, I remember sitting beside my Lolo while my cousin was at the either side of the venue sitting beside my Aunt.

Perhaps brought upon by the Wowowee Tragedy, police visibility or traffic aides was tremendous. They were all-over the vicinity. We parked in front of ULTRA, dunno what compound was that. Parking is free (or they forgot to bill us.)

Sightings: Dindo Pumaren and his boys; Reema Changco, Dominic Uy - who's like a tax collector - the guy can't stay at one place. Alvin Patrimonio - who, as usual, was humbled by requests for photo ops, Tim Cone, Chot Reyes (whom, I had a picture with), Mac Cardona and Ren Ren Ritualo, practically all Eddie Gutierrez boys and more. I wonder why Raymond did not go with his bros. Francis M was there equipped with a camera having a lens about a feet long and a tripod as tall as Yao Ming. Clearly, Kiko is serious with his fotografi career. Inggit ako, that's my next target, I'll get my own DSLR camera sometime next year.

Gino Rufino, TJ Manotoc and Sarah Meier emceed the early part of the event, the rest it was all Kobe show. Sarah who once a thing going with Borgy co-hosted the event with TJ, could have been his bro-in-law had Borgy been not a playa.

A short message from Kobe then he started his ULTRA task: The Black-Out Drills.

During the defensive workout, Kobe didn't hesitate in pointing out that the Nike Elite Campers are well, not that elite. He found major flaw in the way they do their lateral movements. Kobe demoed the stance. He says, “legs have to be spread wide and body has to be lower”. Hearing Kobe instructing someone to do that stance is kinda creepy. Did he say the same thing in Colorado?

Unintentional comedy, Kobe passionately pointed out that the game is a team game and not a one-on-one game. Could someone douse me a bucket of Gatorade, am I dreaming or what? Kobe preaching team game is new.

Kobe was intense (or at least, he pretended to be intense) in teaching Nike Campers how its done. Putting premium on defense, Kobe stressed that the nonchalant defense that the Nike Elite players are doing will bring them nowhere.

Some minutes still spent doing the defensive drills while 1/2 of the crowd are starting to:

A. Yawn
B. Consume all the Hotdogs in the hall.
C. Check-out their captured cellphone and digicam pictures
D. Stare at Richard Guttierez.
E. Shout, “Kobe, Dunk! Dunk!”

The crowd is really looking for Kobe-stuff he did back in 1998. Tons of showboating, cross-over moves (that’s my moooove! he said – from Adidas spot), fancy passes, and all that stuff that don’t matter. That year, he had exhibition games. Halfway thru this event, and he's having none of that. Indeed, 9 to 10 years make the difference.

Another drill is the side-to-side court laterals where they have to touch the sidelines. If not, they'll start over to do the 17 repetitions. And look ma, Sarah Meier, the sideline watcher saw an infraction and they had to start over. I’ ve got a feeling Sarah is the object of downloading for that kid that night. Payback time. (Funny note, when Kobe said to his apprentice, "sit!", he meant for the kid to lay even low on his defensive stance. But the kid attempted to literally sit on the floor. Whoa! What if, during the offensive drill, the pick and roll, Kobe yells, "Roll!", would he actually roll? Now, Jump! Bite!)

Then, the defensive drill was over.

BTW, coach Eric Altamirano (the pluggable coach) and Alex Compton assisted Kobe in the drills. Or in Filipino, Coach Eric was the taga-abot while the enthusiastic Alex Compton was the taga-abot PLUS, taga-palakpak. Hell, I can do that.

On offense, they spent some minutes firing away. But still the focus is train hard and do countless repetitions. Shoot as many as 1000 (made shots btw) he says. Practice makes perfect, or in real life, practice makes a complete player. And so no doubt, Kobe Bryant is the most complete player in the planet. Now wonder no more, why the hell Kobe scored 81 points and he looked like he could do another 48 minute game. Plenty of energy in the tank. Thanks to the Black Out training.

Continuing the offense lecture, to facilitate a team-oriented assault, they had a 3-on-3 game. Kobe says there's a "one-dribble" rule. Whoa, here comes Mr. Bryant preaching players to pass. Nice Kobe, Phil Jackson can’t be more delighted now.

Then, the offensive exercise was over.

Basically, that's what the ULTRA event was. For Kobe to personally share part of regiment to some young basketball players.

But a Kobe show without a little flair is not a Kobe Show. Thus, to cap the proceedings, he did his stuff. A couple of dunks (he missed twice) including the over-the-two-kids dunk. The crowd when nuts, my camera too. And so, I got no pics to share. Ahhh, here are some friends, saving the day with some video clips. Ready? One Two Three.
